Class Holds Leadership Conference

Leadershirt

You may have noticed a lot of people running around in black shirts yesterday, well that's because Madill's Leadership Class held it's 4th annual Leadership Conference! This years theme was the Olympics, and 8 teams of 7th and 8th graders from Madill's feeder schools competed in activities and games encouraging leadership.

Participants were inspired by guest speaker Andy Thibodeau and a fun day was had by all those involved. The Leadership class would like to extend a huge thank you to all the volunteers and teachers who helped make this possible, it wouldn't have happened without your support and dedication.

Madill Students Help Make Our Community Green!

Tree Planting

Grade 9 students work to plant trees in Wingham.

On Wednesday, June 13, Mr. Walker's and Mrs. Jackson's period 3 Geography classes, assisted with planting shrubs along the Wingham Trail. Under the guidance of Phil Beard of the MVCA, the students did some excellent community service, enriching the ecological variety along our own Wingham Trail. If you check by the new arch on the main street of Wingham, you'll see some of our handy work.

Shade

Tree planters search out some shade during a break.

It was hard work and very hot, so to cool down after a few hours of planting shrubs and trees in the hot sun, the classes headed to the Wingham splash pad to cool down. As you can see, fun was had by all and it was very refreshing.

Thanks to the students for some excellent community service and a FUN "day in the park".

Art Class to Toronto

St. Pat's Station

Students emerge from the subway into bright sunlight at St. Patrick's station.

Art students took a day away from classes on Friday to experience art first hand! It was an early and snowy start and a long bus trip to Toronto but a short ride on the subway from the Yorkdale station and they were downtown to see a variety of art venues.

Sculpture Study

The Henry Moore gallery at the AGO provided plenty of sculpture examples to study!

The day consisted of a visit to the Art Gallery of Ontario to see excerpts from the permanent collection, a short stop at 401 Richmond street to check out private galleries and art related businesses, a tour of the Ontario College of Art and a stop at the Royal Ontario Museum to see a special exhibit on Italian design.

Art Group

Students experienced a variety of cultures at lunch as well- from Dim Sum in China Town to empanadas in Kensington Market!

Drama Class A Real "Tragedy"!

Can You Scratch My Nose?

This is no day at the spa for these students- they were busy making masks!

Students in Ms. Trick's grade 10 drama class are currently doing a unit on Greek tragedy. Groups will work to write and stage contemporary short plays which follow the ancient Greek format for tragedy.

Masks R Us!

Groups work together to put finishing touches on their masks.

Each character, true to tradition, will have a mask. Ms. Trick's students used both plaster and papier maché to create their character masks.

Students Help With Habitat for Humanity

On the Job Site
Senior construction class on the job site!

Senior construction classes at Madill are getting an opportunity to put their skills to work for a good cause! The students were at the building site at the corner of Carling Terrace and Elm streets here in Wingham to help pour the footings for a "Habitat for Humanity" home. They will continue to work together with local businesses and professionals to see the house completed.

Houses are built for families within our community through donations in kind from business and the dedicated work of volunteers. Our students are proud to be part of this initiative! Click the link to learn more about Habitat for Humanity in Huron County.

Drama Class Presents "Yearbook" Play

Looking Both Ways
Cast member from "The Yearbook" take a look at characters within a school.

As part of our Board of Education's character education initiative, our grade 12 drama students have written a play entitled "The Yearbook" that deals with the positive and negative aspects of character. The performance takes place on the set of a reality show in which the students must strive to show good character, or risk elimination from the F.E. Madill Yearbook.

Classroom Dynamics
Much of the play takes place within a school setting and deals with student issues.

The grade 12's are performing at most of our feeder schools, including Blyth, Howick, Wawanosh, Brussels, Turnberry, and Wingham. Grade 10 music students, the senior and junior concert bands, and the jazz band have also taken advantage of the opportunity to tour and have joined the drama students on the road this week.

Building Skills with "Off Site Construction"

Off Site Construction Class
Off site construction class pause for a break.

The grade 11 "Off Site Construction" class are really putting their skills to work for them. These students leave the classroom behind and head to the job site to get hands on experience with carpentry, bricklaying, plumbing and electrical work, all while they earn high shool credits. Madill is currently the only school within the Avon Maitland District School board to offer this program!

Building a Deck
The off site crew work hard building a deck for a Wingham home.

This semester the class has been kept busy with four job sites but next year the addition of a grade 12 class will mean that they can expand. Anyone interested in having the class handle a project for them is asked to contact the teacher, (click here to email Mr. Wallace). The cost is a small donation to the program and any materials.
