Rugby Season Underway

Junior Rugby Practice
The junior team gets in some practice time.

Junior Boys rugby started the season with many new players who took a while to catch on to the game of rugby, but catch on they have! The first exhibition match with Kincardine was a very high scoring affair on both sides of the ball with Kincardine coming out on top 29-22. In their second exhibition match the team worked more on defense and held Saugeen SS to only 17 points. At the Mustang Cup, held at Madill, all the hard work paid off as Madill defeated Walkerton Sacred Heart and Medway to advance to the championship game. After several opportunities to score, the clock ran out and the Mustangs had to settle for a 5-0 loss at the hands of Grey Highlands. Ready for the Huron Perth season to start, the boys took their skills and their "A" game to St Mikes in Stratford and ran away with a 36-3 victory. Prospects for the remaining season look good with a shot at becoming HP Champions for a second straight year.

Practice for the boys rugby team
The senior team practices a scrum.

The Senior Boys rugby team is a relatively young squad with only a few returning veterans and many of last year's successful Junior team players. The season started slowly but momentum has started to build. A loss at the hands of Kincardine in exhibition play, and some very tough competition in Saltfleet against the likes of Brantford Collegiate and Oakville Trafalgar helped this team realize that they have to earn every inch on the field this season. A 21-3 win over Saugeen SS helped the confidence level of the team as they entered the Miller Cup. A 22-0 defeat of East Elgin set the stage for a tough battle with St Mary's of Woodstock. The Stangs lost an overtime game on drop goals by a score of 1-0. In the last game of the tournament the Mustangs regained their winning ways beating Woodstock Collegiate by a score of 12-0. League games start this week with trips to South Huron and a visit from Stratford Northwestern.
