Madill Student Achieves Level 1 Apprenticeship Exemption

Carpentry

Pictured above is Rosa Meriam shaking hands with Andris Balotis from Conestoga College (right) and Mr. McKague (left) after passing the Carpentry level 1 exemption exam.

Rosa Meriam is the first high school student in Ontario to earn an exemption for level 1 general carpenter through Conestoga college. This was made possible because of the alignment of grade 11 and 12 construction technology curriculum and college level one carpentry curriculum. Rosa is a graduate of Madill's Construction High Skills Major program and is currently apprenticing with John Hickey Construction. Congratulations Rosa. You have made us all proud!

Track Team Competes at OFSAA West

Ofsaa-regional

Gina Murray in the Junior Girls Javelin

The Track and Field team had another outstanding meet at OFSAA West Regionals. Madill athletes earned top six ribbons in 20 of the 32 events in which they participated. 10 of the 21 athletes from Madill earned at least one top four result and have earned the right to participate in the OFSAA Championships in Toronto on June 4-6. Five athletes on the team (A.J. Beasley, Cole Pellett, Ben Dailleboust, Michael Ballagh and Tyler Smith) have qualified to advance in more than one event each. New school records were set by A.J. Beasley in the 110m Hurdles and Ben Dailleboust in the 100m Hurdles. A.J. broke his own record in a time of 14.85 and Ben broke his own record in a time of 14.50.

There were also many excellent results that missed advancing by the smallest of margins. A.J. Beasley missed advancing in the 400m Hurdles by less than 1/1000th of a second, the Junior Girls 4x100m Relay team needed to be less than 1/4 of a second faster to advance and Michael Ballagh was only 1 cm short of advancing in the Junior Boys Triple Jump. Jodie Eadie, a left-handed thrower, faced a wind that was favourable to right-handed throwers and still managed to finish 5th in her first year as a senior. In a meet that included heavy winds, severe rain, long delays and events run in the dark, the team still had 8 personal best performances. Congratulations to everyone who made it to this extremely high level of competition and good luck to those who are advancing to the provincial championships.

Track Team - WOSSAA Report

Track-wossaa

The Madill Track and Field Team was phenomenally successful at WOSSAA.  Winning the Overall Boys WOSSAA title is a major accomplishment and it has been approximately 25 years since Madill brought home the title.  The team also won the Senior Boys title.  Ben Dailleboust won the individual award for the top Junior Boy.  Ben had gold medals in both the 100m and 300m hurdles and finished 6th in the Long Jump to earn more points than any other Junior Boy at the competition.

There were four new school records set.  Gina Murray shattered both the F. E. Madill and WOSSAA Junior Girls Javelin record by 3 meters on her way to winning gold in the event with a throw of 38.29 m .  That throw ranks her second in the Province based on every competition so far this year.  The Junior Boys`4x100m Relay Team of Brayden Pellett, Mike Ballagh, Tyler Smith and Ben Dailleboust continued to excel as they set new WOSSAA and F.E. Madill records in a time of 44.88 seconds which ranks them 3rd in the Province this year.  Ben Procter ran an amazing 800m race to set a new school record in a time of 1:59.94.

The final school record broken was by the 4x400m Relay team of Connor Panton, Mike Ballagh, Ben Procter and A.J. Beasley (3:31.25).  There were 25 individual personal bests earned and 4 relay team personal bests.  The outstanding results included 20 athl etes who had at least one top 5 finish and who will be advancing to OFSA A West Regionals in 32 different events.  Congratulations to all of the athletes who competed and represented F.E. Madill so well.
