• Elements of art will be used as the building blocks of the composition
- Line will be used to add contrast to edges
- Shape will be used to create interesting patterns
- Colour will be used to add interest and variety in the composition
• Principles of art will be used to create an effective composition
- Contrast will be used to make different areas stand out
- Variety will be used to make a more interesting compositon
- Emphasis will be used to make some areas more important
- Repetition, Rhythm or Pattern will be used to unify the composition
- Balance will be used to create an even composition

• Sketchbook will have a "brainstorming" list of ideas for painting
- list should include ideas not just images
-list should explore several different ideas and not just one theme
• Sketchbook will gather resources for ideas
- several images will be used for best idea not just one picture
• Sketchbook will test out visual compositions for ideas
- several rough sketches should explore different possible compositions

• Block in / build up technique will be used for suggesting form
- Layers of tints and shades will be used to create highlight and shadow details
- Build-up layers will blend transitions between colour values smoothly to suggest form
- Colours will be mixed proprerly to maintain clean, clear colour
2. The Creative Process
• Sketchbook will have a "brainstorming" list of ideas for painting
- list should include ideas not just images
