College and University Application Tutorials

Attention students who are planning to apply to college or university for fall 2011 -- college and university application tutorials will be held the week of November 15th. At this tutorial you will receive your PIN number and information about applying. Come into the guidance office to sign up.

The sessions will take place in the library seminar room, but students must sign up in advance. There will be two sessions available to choose from. If one session fills up, only the other will be available, so come early to the guidance office to sign up.

Go to your regular class at the time of the tutorial. There will be an announcement from the office to come to the library seminar room.

Parent Teacher Night -- Postsecondary Information Sessions

Parent-teacher night takes place this evening (October 14) from 6:30 until 8:30 in the large gym. Parents please register at the Victoria Street entrance.

At 6:30, parents of students planning to apply to an Ontario college for the fall of September 2011 are invited to come to the library for an information session about the college application process.

At 7:30, parents of students planning to apply to an Ontario university for the fall of September 2011 are invited to come to the library for an information session about the university application process.

College Preparation

College Application for Fall 2011

 

1. Post secondary institutions visit Madill

– lists posted in all homerooms and in the guidance office

– sign up prior to the visit in the guidance office

2. CIP (College Information Program)

– Conestoga College - Mon. Oct. 25^th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. - students and parents welcome and Tues. Oct. 26^th from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – focus on students

– Fanshawe College - Fri. Oct. 22^nd - all day - students and parents welcome to attend Ontario colleges will be at both CIP days

– ALL

– don’t miss this opportunity to speak with the representatives of the colleges that do not visit Madill or that you were unable to hear at Madill PLUS it is an opportunity to visit a college campus

3. Information about College Programs

–the Find a Program locator pamphlet will be available with information about using the web to access the locator chart – it will be at

www.ontariocolleges.ca;

this chart allows you to research which colleges offer the program you are interested in applying to and then permits you to go to the college site for more information about that program

– calendars are available in the Guidance Office (some for overnight loan, others to read in the office)

– online information is more up-to-date and comprehensive than the calendars and is available on the individual college websites – accessible directly (hotlinks are available through the Ontario Colleges website) or through many of the websites on the attached sheet

– students should plan a campus visit to the colleges that are their top choices – programs are available at March Break or can be arranged at any time by phoning the liaison number on the college website

– each college applicant will have an interview with a guidance counsellor during the fall – come prepared with your questions

4. Application Deadline

– Ontario college application deadline is February 1, 2011

–

– applications are done online and we recommend completing the application prior to the Christmas Break

– each applicant will receive an OEN number for OCAS (Ontario College Application Service); these are required for application of current high school students and will be given to students by the Guidance Office

5. Application Tutorial

– application tutorials will be held in mid-November – listen for announcements to sign up for one of these

6. Dates of Interest

In order to apply to college, you must complete your OSSD which includes 30 credits, 40 hours of Community Involvement and successful completion of the Literacy Requirement – this information is transmitted to the colleges via OCAS on the various dates, listed below; it is important that you complete the 40 hours and hand the sheet in to the guidance office, early in your final year at Madill as colleges are looking for that information in each transmission.

October 12-15 2010 Demographic data, academic history and projected course registration for semester two

November 19-24 2010 Midterm first semester marks sent to OCAS for all potential college applicants

February 1 2011 Deadline for applications to college

February 11 2011 Deadline for submission of final first semester grades by secondary schools

April 22-27 2011 Deadline for submission of midterm second semester grades by secondary schools

May 2 2011 By this date, applicants must confirm their acceptance of an offer of admission through OCAS; after this date, the colleges will determine the date confirmations are due

June 15 2011 Earliest date that colleges may require payment of tuition fees

June 30 2011 Deadline for submission of final second semester grades and proof of graduation (including Community Involvement Hours!) by secondary schools

August 26 2011 If a student is upgrading marks over the summer, the student is responsible for ensuring that these marks are sent to OCAS so that a final decision about admission can be made by the college

7. Financial Assistance

A. OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program)

– includes a portion from the Canadian government as well as the Ontario government

– must be applied for online AFTER you have been offered admission and have accepted an offer of admission to a particular college (updated forms are usually available online in May or June)

– much of the information needed for this application is from your income tax return and your parents’ income tax return so OSAP applications cannot be done before your income tax return has been completed (income tax return due date is April 30^th)

– in order to be eligible for the Aiming for the Top(Queen Elizabeth II) Scholarship, you must complete an OSAP application (even if you think you will be declined for OSAP)

B. Scholarships and Bursaries (scholarships are often mark based but bursaries are NOT)

– a list of scholarships and bursaries whose applications are sent to the school is posted in homerooms and the guidance office

– other scholarships and bursaries can be researched using print material in the guidance office or online at

students can apply to 5 programs (maximum of 3 at any one college) and the cost is $95.00; applications will not be processed until payment is received

– DON’T FORGET TO FILL IN THE COMMENCEMENT AWARDS FORM TO BE ELIGIBLE – NOT ALL OF THESE AWARDS ARE MARKS BASED!

 

8. If you are applying to a private college (e.g. Westervelt) or out of province, this is done on a separate application that is unique to each institution; you should read their information and comply with the dates they set out. You will need to ask the Guidance Secretary to prepare and send transcripts for you as they are requested by the private school you are applying to.

9. Preparing to Exit from Secondary School

– fill in the purple Commencement Awards form and hand in to the guidance office before leaving for the summer

– rent your gown for commencement in late May or June ($15); if you wait to rent your gown in August or as late as the evening of commencement the cost will be $20 and there is no guarantee of size or availability

– if you are planning to play varsity sports at college, Madill is starting a "Wall of Fame"; any grad of Madill who plays on a college team for at least 2 years will be included; please call the school to let us know so that you may included in this recognition of athletics

1st half of period -- College -- All graduating students thinking of college for next year.

2nd half of period -- Apprenticeship -- All graduating students thinking of apprenticeship for next year.

Period 4

1st half of period - University -- All graduating students thinking of university for next year.

2nd half of period - Workplace -- All graduating students thinking of the workplace for next year.

Wednesday, Sept. 15:

Period 1

1st half of period -- Workplace -- All graduating students thinking of the workplace for next year.

 

2nd half of period --University -- All graduating students thinking of university for next year.

Period 3

1st half of period - Apprenticeship - All graduating students thinking of apprenticeship for next year.

2nd half of period - College -- All graduating students thinking of college for next year.

 

Note: Each destination is repeated. Choose one session, not both, for a specific destination.

Students will be called to the library by announcement.

Please let your teacher know in advance that you will be attending, and choose the session that will interfere the least with your learning.

 

College Fair

The annual College Fair at Conestoga College will be held Monday, October 25th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 26th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Doon Campus Conestoga College. This information session will include the opportunity to speak to representatives from all of Ontario's community colleges. Families are welcome.

OSAP

Students planning to attend a postsecondary institution for the 2010/2011 should consider applying for OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program). Even if you don't believe that you are eligible for a loan, consider that a number of Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top scholarships (monetary value from $100 to several thousand dollars) are awarded per school, and that they are only awarded to those who complete the OSAP application. Students eligible for OSAP may also be eligible for a textbook and technology grant from the government.

Life 101 For Students

Proper management of money, even knowing what paperwork needs to be kept, is important to everyone – parents and students alike – but it’s not often a kitchen table topic. Maybe it should be! Tuesday April 27^th, 2010, join us for a free session entitled Life 101 for Students.

What do your children spend their money on? How will that change when they’re managing on their own? Are they prepared for that change? Are you? If you have students who will be heading off on their own in the next few years you need to help them prepare for that future.

On Tuesday April 27^th, 2010, at the REACH Centre in Clinton, you have an opportunity to participate in a group discussion - geared for students - about proper financial management. Hosted by the Small Business Enterprise Centre, Erin Roy, Alison Lobb and John McNeilly will address a series of topics designed to generate discussion about money management. Learn what’s involved in developing a spending plan. Students bring your parents! Parents bring your students!

Dual Credits

Did you know you can earn a high school credit and a college credit at the same time?

The dual credit program is an opportunity for students to attend Lambton, Fanshawe and/or Conestoga College and take a tuition free college course in a diploma or certificate program that also counts as an elective on their high school transcript.

Dual credits are intended for grade 12 students (grade 11 students may be eligible on an individual basis) in all pathways. Students will complete an application and an interview prior to acceptance in this program. The College Dual Credit Program may run in both semesters next year (to be determined by enrollment and space availability).

OSAP

Planning to apply to OSAP for postsecondary expenses for the 2009 / 2010 school year?

What is OSAP?

OSAP is a program run by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, and funded by the provincial and federal governments.

OSAP is a needs-based program. This means that it provides loans, grants, scholarships and bursaries based on a formula that compares your educational costs to expected contributions from your parents or your spouse (if applicable) and your own income and assets.

OSAP provides eligible Ontario students with financial assistance to help pay for their tuition, books, mandatory fees, living costs and transportation.

Who should apply:

All students planning to attend an Ontario postsecondary institution in 2009/2010 should complete an OSAP application. Even students who don't qualify for loans may qualify for an Aiming for the Top scholarship, and will qualify for a textbook / technology grant.

- once you and your parents have completed tax returns for the previous year
